A Cure for the Summertime Blues

05.31.2006 @ 09:36 PM PT | Matt Hartley

As Steve Gillmor highlights the good and the bad happenings for the summer, I noticed that Gnomedex 5.0 from last year received its props for providing such easy an communication venue. This year at Gnomedex 6.0, I believe that Steve will find that the conference itself has been taken up yet another notch.

In fact, the Gillmor Gang is a floating offshore conference of its own, operating just outside the three-mile limit of paid vendor keynotes and nonconferences. What I liked about last year’s Gnomedex and this year’s Syndicate New York was that we were able to communicate without bending so far over to the entrenched business models of platform vendors or angel investors that our message was diluted beyond value…. Microsoft: Diamond Sponsor

05.24.2006 @ 01:30 PM PT | Chris Pirillo

We’d like to formally announce our Diamond sponsor, Microsoft. We’re working with several of their departments - but they’re coming together under the same name. You’ll see just which Microsofties chose to be involved with Gnomedex when we’re all at the event together. Without partners like Microsoft, Gnomedex would only be able to live up to half of its potential. We have a fantastic set of (expanding) speakers, and now we have a fantastic set of (expanding) sponsors.

Discussion Leader Updates

05.18.2006 @ 12:35 AM PT | Chris Pirillo

For those of you who aren’t subscribed to my personal blog, I wanted to give you a roundup of all the current discussion leaders (with more to come). If you recognize the faces, they’ll need no introduction. If you don’t know who any of these people are, just click their face (here, not in real life) to read more about who they are and/or what they do:

A Storm of Sponsors!

I’m not going to tease you with our first set of signed sponsors - here’s the list so far:

Stay tuned for more!

Gnomedex Site Redesign Voting

05.17.2006 @ 12:31 AM PT | Chris Pirillo

I called upon Gnomedex.com’s original graphic artist to give ‘er another go. Eddie Hollenbeck is back and better than ever, as evidenced by these mock-ups. I definitely have my top choice, but would like to know your preference as well.

Gnomedex Redesign - Option 3 Gnomedex Redesign - Option 2 Gnomedex Redesign - Option 1

I’m starting to get caught up, and I have a handful of other conference participants to announce. Hang in there, my friends - we’re just getting warmed up. If you haven’t purchased your ticket yet, please do. If I haven’t personally invited you to be a discussion leader, don’t count yourself out yet.

Ponzi Makes a Seattle Hotel Suggestion

05.15.2006 @ 12:21 AM PT | Chris Pirillo

This is not an endorsement, but Ponzi answered someone’s hotel question and I thought it was good enough to share here with the rest of the world:

I know the Silvercloud on Broadway is running a special. If you book more than a handful of rooms, they may give you an even better discount. The hotel isn’t downtown, but it’s only 10-15 minutes away. It’s in Capitol Hill - with a grocery store (QFC), coffee (Caffe Vita), and a handful of nice restaurants nearby. If price wasn’t an issue and I could stay where I wanted, it would be either the W or The Hotel Monaco on 4th (my two favorites in Seattle).

More Discussion Leaders Added

05.15.2006 @ 12:15 AM PT | Chris Pirillo

The dais is growing steadily. We’ve added a few more since our last update, as you can see. And yes, the best is yet to come!

Who’s Speaking At Gnomedex? Nobody. Everybody.

05.02.2006 @ 11:31 PM PT | Chris Pirillo

This year, there will be no speakers at Gnomedex. There will be no panels, either. We realize this is a radical departure from the norm, but there’s a method to our madness. We’ve begun to invite a select group of people to be discussion leaders - individuals who will stand on stage, present an idea or two, answer questions, and then generally lead the audience’s discussion and participation. Tomorrow, I’ll unveil one of our confirmed discussion leaders. I will continue to reveal them, one by one, over the course of the next few weeks. You must understand this, however: at Gnomedex, the audience always holds the stage. I’m not the first person to figure this out, though (thank you, Dave and Steve).
